AAU College Hockey January 17-19 Recap

Congratulations to the Tennessee Ice Vols for winning the Savannah Hockey Classic for the first time in program history! Tennessee took down Florida in a come-from-behind effort on Friday and doubled up Georgia 8-4 in a thrilling Championship Game on Saturday.

Tennessee captain Connor Frazer took home tournament MVP after scoring two goals and two assists in the two games.

Game of the Week: Clemson(D2) @ Middle Tennessee State(D2)

Clemson hasn’t wasted any time making an impression in the spring semester!

After being inactive for the fall, the Clemson Tigers have plenty of catching up to do if they want to advance to postseason play. They started on the right foot last weekend, violently sweeping Alabama-Huntsville.

This weekend presented a heftier challenge, though, as they traveled to Tennessee to take on one of the top teams in all of Division 2. Clemson made the most significant statement of the spring semester by taking down Middle Tennessee State in the opening game of their series, 3-1.

Tigers goalie, Parker Dietz, made 27 saves en route to the win for Clemson. The Blue Raiders earned a split in the series with a 5-3 win on Saturday, but the Tigers showed they’re not a team to be taken lightly.

Clemson is in position to make the College Hockey South Division 2 playoffs but still have work to do if they want to qualify for the National Championship.

Alabama(D3) @ Kutztown(D2)

Sixty-five minutes wasn’t enough to decide this outdoor exhibition between Kutztown and Alabama, as it ended in a 3-3 tie.

The visiting Frozen Tide broke the ice a few minutes into the second period with a goal from Hunter Cohen(5). Alabama doubled their lead with a power-play goal from Evan Simos(10). The Golden Bears decided to join the power-play goal party as Alabama started a parade to the penalty box.

Kutztown scored three goals on the man advantage in nine minutes of game time to take their first lead of the game.

Alabama leading-scorer Rhys Gulotta(91) played the hero in the final minutes to draw the Frozen Tide back even, and the score would remain tied. Frozen Tide goalie Tyler Terranova(30) stopped 39 of 42 shots in the outdoor matchup.

UNYCHL Division 2 – Canisius @ Redeemer

After their performance this weekend, Canisius are the ones that need to redeem themselves.

The Golden Griffins got sent back over the border with a 9-1 lashing at the hands of the Redeemer Royals. Canisius started the game off on a high, though, scoring the opening goal and holding the lead for about three minutes.

What followed was nine unanswered goals by the Royals that turned this game from a contest into a crime scene.

A truly dominant performance by Redeemer that was led by Andrew Van Dyke(14), who picked up four assists in the eight-goal beatdown.

ACCHL Division 2 – High Point @ Wake Forest

These two Tar Heel state rivals battled tooth and nail to climb or, in High Point’s case, keep their place in the standings.

The Demon Deacons drove their way into the lead in the early goings of this critical division matchup. Colin Rosato(22) scored his first goal of the season 32 seconds into the first period and was assisted by Jesper Snow(27), also his first assist this year.

The Deacon lead would be short-lived because of a High Point goal scored by Nick Sasso(11). The game would enter the first intermission tied at one.

The Panthers broke through for their second and eventually game-winning goal in the dying minutes of the second period. High Point added two insurance markers in crunch time to escape with a 4-1 win over their division foe.

Brian Scopel(70) picked up the win for the Panthers, their 19th of the season.
